Safety helmet colour code: who wears which colour

White, yellow, red, blue, orange, green and grey: the helmet colour scheme MM’s brochure suggests, why IS 2925 sets none, and how a site should apply one.

On a busy site, a helmet’s colour tells you at a glance who someone is: the engineer, the electrician, the safety officer, the visitor. It is one of the most searched questions about helmets in India, so here is the short answer and the scheme MM uses.

Is there an Indian standard for helmet colours?

No. IS 2925, the Indian standard for industrial safety helmets, sets how a helmet must perform, not what colour it is. Colour is a site convention, decided by the employer and written into the site’s safety rules. The scheme below is the one MM’s helmet brochure suggests.

Applying a colour code on site

  • Write the scheme into the site’s safety rules and induction, so everyone reads the colours the same way.
  • Keep one colour, often grey, for visitors, so a stranger on site stands out.
  • Order by colour as well as size: the CH01 and CH02 are listed in all seven colours.
  • Replace a helmet whose colour has faded in the sun: fading is also a sign the shell is ageing. See when to replace a helmet.

Colour does not change protection

A white helmet and a yellow one of the same model pass the same tests. What protects the wearer is the standard the helmet is made to and the condition it is in: see IS 2925 safety helmets and helmet types and classes.
