The MMLJL life jacket light gives 0.75 cd for 8 hours and the MMLBL lifebuoy light 2 cd, both switched on by water. The MMLJW whistle sounds either way up, straight out of the water. The MMBLL buoyant lifelines are 8 mm polypropylene in 25 m and 30 m lengths. The MMLJW and MMLBL name IRS type approval, as stated by MM. A radar reflector makes a small boat easier for a ship’s radar to pick up.
- What SOLAS asks of each light: life jacket and lifebuoy lights.
- Lines, lights and smoke signals on a ship’s lifebuoys: lifebuoy ring specification.
- The whistle’s 100 dB(A) test and the others: what the approvals demand.

All buyer guides- The LSA Code, chapter by chapter: life-saving appliancesWhat the International Life-Saving Appliance Code covers, chapter by chapter, from lifebuoys and lifejackets to signals, survival craft and rescue boats.
- Radar reflectors: why a small boat should carry oneWhy wooden and plastic boats are hard for a ship’s radar to see, how a radar reflector fixes it, and how to mount one in the catch-rain position, and how high.
- Life jacket and lifebuoy lights: what SOLAS requiresA life jacket light must give 0.75 cd for 8 hours; a lifebuoy light 2 cd for 2 hours. The SOLAS rules for both, how they switch on, and MM’s two lights.
