Helmet listings mix three systems: ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 from the United States, EN 397 from Europe, and IS 2925 from the Bureau of Indian Standards. They grade different things, so a “Type II, Class E” helmet and an ISI-marked one cannot be compared label for label. This is what each label means.
ANSI Z89.1: types and classes
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Type I | Tested for a blow to the top of the head |
| Type II | Tested for blows to the top and the sides, including off-centre |
| Class G (general) | Proof-tested at 2,200 V |
| Class E (electrical) | Proof-tested at 20,000 V |
| Class C (conductive) | No electrical protection |
EN 397: the European standard and its options
EN 397 sets the core tests every industrial helmet passes, then lists options a helmet may claim and must then be marked with:
- −20 °C or −30 °C: very low temperature.
- +150 °C: very high temperature.
- 440 V a.c.: short accidental contact with live conductors up to 440 V.
- LD: lateral deformation, a squeeze from the sides.
- MM: molten metal splash.
IS 2925 in India
In India, industrial safety helmets are specified to IS 2925:1984, and an ISI-marked helmet is covered by a BIS licence for it. Its tests include a 3 kg striker dropped 1.5 m with no more than 5 kN reaching the head, a 500 g cone dropped from 3 m, flame, heat, water absorption, and 2,000 V for one minute. The IS 2925 post covers them, and how to check an ISI mark’s licence.
MM’s CH01 and CH02 carry the ISI mark, as stated by MM, and are listed at electrical Class 0, 2000 V a.c. Read a helmet’s electrical rating against the standard named on it, not against another standard’s classes.
Which to ask for
- Work in India: IS 2925 with the ISI mark, and the CM/L licence number beside it.
- European contracts: EN 397, with the options the work needs marked on the helmet.
- American contracts: the ANSI type and class.
- Electrical work: the electrical rating the job calls for, shown on the helmet itself.
What sits inside the shell is covered elsewhere: the suspension harness in parts of a safety helmet, and the ratchet or nape headband in choosing a safety helmet headband.
| Model | Weight | Head size | Electrical class |
|---|---|---|---|
| MM Safety Helmet With Ventilation CH01 | 345 g approx. | 53 to 63 cm | Class 0, 2000 V a.c. |
| MM Safety Helmet With Ventilation CH02 | 300 g approx. | 53 to 63 cm | Class 0, 2000 V a.c. |
| MM Safety Helmet Without Ventilation CH01 | 345 g approx. | 53 to 63 cm | Class 0, 2000 V a.c. |
| MM Safety Helmet Without Ventilation CH02 | 300 g approx. | 53 to 63 cm | Class 0, 2000 V a.c. |
The standards’ figures are their own requirements; MM’s are its catalogue data. Request a quote with colours and quantities.
