Choosing fishnet floats: purse seine, gill net and trawl

Which MM fishnet float is listed for purse seine and gill nets, which for trawling and breeding, and how the virgin and regular grades and sizes are named.

A float line is only as good as the floats on it, and the right float depends on the net it carries. MM’s catalogue lists its floats by shape, eyelet and grade, each against the nets it is made for. This guide puts those listings side by side.

By net type

  • Purse seine and gill nets: the globe float with top and bottom eyelets, which threads onto the float line through its two eyelets.
  • Trawling and breeding: the plain float with two eyelets, listed in both a virgin grade and a regular (eco) grade.
  • The Micky Mouse float, also listed in virgin and regular grades, and the apple float at 100 by 75 mm.
  • For larger flotation, the pipe float: a 600 mm flotation system with an outside diameter of 300 mm, in orange as standard.

Sizes, weights and buoyancy

The 2026 catalogue lists each float in ABS by size, with the weight of the float and the buoyancy it gives. The plain float with two eyelets runs from 5″ to 12″; the globe float with top and bottom eyelets from 8″ to 16″. Buoyancy is the weight of net and line a float will hold up, so the count per net follows from the net’s weight in water.

Virgin and regular grades

Several floats are listed in two grades, virgin and regular (also written eco). The grade is part of the model as MM lists it, so name it when you enquire, along with the net the floats are for, the float line diameter and the quantity per net. From those MM can quote the float and count to suit.

The floats

Uses and grades are as listed in MM’s catalogue data. See the full Commercial Fishing range, or request a quote with your net specification. Need a size we don’t list, or your own part? Send us the drawing or a sample.
