A life jacket in the wheelhouse saves no one. On a fishing boat the jacket that works is the one the crew will actually wear through a long, hot, wet day of hauling nets. That changes what to look for.
Freedom to work
Hauling, sorting and mending need free arms and shoulders. Jacket and vest styles that open at the sides and sit close to the body get in the way less than bulky yoke jackets. MM’s MMWV work vest, for example, is listed with adjustable shoulders and sides and a heavy-duty belt and chest strap: 100 N, PFD Type III, for wearers up to 90 kg.
Nothing to snag
- Tuck or tie off strap ends so they cannot catch in a winch, a net or a line.
- A leg strap stops the jacket riding up; MM lists the STERN and SUMO with one.
- Among hooks and sharp edges, foam is the safer choice: an inflatable’s bladder can be punctured. See inflatable or foam.
Enough buoyancy for the water you fish
Near-shore and estuary work and offshore work need different levels: 100 N for sheltered water, 150 N for general offshore use, in EN ISO 12402’s classes. Boats that must carry approved equipment follow their survey. See how to choose a life jacket.
Seen at night
Night fishing needs a light on every jacket and a whistle tied on; reflective tape catches a searchlight. See life jacket lights.

Check them while the boats are ashore
The monsoon fishing ban, when boats stay in harbour, is a good time to check every jacket: cover, foam, buckles, tape, whistle, light battery and label. The checklist is in how long a life jacket lasts.
